Website Design Things to Consider

Designing a website is about far more than choosing a layout, colors and branding.  Your website will attract a far greater audience by starting with examining what their needs are and how you will best serve them. I’ve made a helpful list of several key considerations for you to ponder, whether you want a new site or to improve your current site by hiring me for website maintenance services.

What do you hope to achieve by creating your website?  

Goals for websites can vary.   Probably the most common goal that comes to mind is to convert visitors into  paying customers.  Other goals might be to inform, gain notoriety, have a venue for blogging, generate newsletter subscribers or create social media followers.

Who is your target audience?

Knowing your target audience will help create the tone of your website.  Some things to consider might be the gender, age and interests of your typical customer.

Who are your most typical customers?

When writing the content of your website, it’s important to know the best way to speak directly to your customers in a way that is appealing to them. Answering the following three questions will glean pivotal information to help create the flow of the design:

What are the top three questions your highest-value customers ask?

What are the answers to those questions?

How/where do customers currently find or get those answers?

Getting feedback is also helpful, it’s helpful to find out why a customer acted or didn’t take action.  We can do this by asking clients:

What made you sign up or buy this product/service?

Why do you keep coming back and buying more from this company, or Why did you stop?

What about this product has not met your expectations?

Of course, if you have a blog site, these questions can be modified and applied accordingly.

If you currently have a website that is tracked by Google Analytics or Bing and are getting a redesign, your designer or SEO people will also want access to those stats. By checking the time on the site/page/session, bounce rate and number of pages per session, we can determine what content is meeting or not meeting your customer’s expectations.

And last but certainly not least – social media.  Do you use social media such as Facebook, Instagram or Twitter?  With a little research, we can determine which social media account will best promote your site and how to use them.  I recently wrote an article about how people use Facebook – Huge SEO Opportunities Frequently Missed – and suggest a better way.
